Top Ten Tuesday #5

Top Ten Tuesday is an original feature/weekly meme created at The Broke and the Bookish.

This Week's Top Ten is: Words/Topics That Will Make Me Not Pick Up A Book

This was a tough one. I love a lot of different genres and types of books. I didn't think I'd be able to come up with ten, but a number of text messages with friends and family later I managed it.

Torture
I'm just not into reading about people being tortured. I enjoy most forms of horror, but any kind of torture scenes just kind of disgust me.

Any Kind of Religion
Don't get me wrong, I have nothing against religions or religious people. I am just not too into reading about religion unless it is supernatural a la the show Supernatural.

Middle Grade
I am just not that into middle grade books. The only ones I've really read are the Harry Potter books. I want to like it though. If anyone has some good middle grade suggestions I would love to give it another go.

Animal Cruelty
I cannot read anything with animal cruelty even if it's a book about revenge or something like that. I cannot read about animals being abused. I just can't stand it.

Child Abuse
I feel the same way about this topic as animal cruelty. I know some books are written as true stories or to spread awareness, but I just can't handle it.

Military Thrillers
I just can't get into any kind of military books. I'm sure there are amazing ones out there, they're just not my cup of tea. I think I just don't know enough about any kind of military to really understand or get into a story or book about it.

Self-help
Once again I'm sure there are some amazing self-help books that help people, but it's just not for me.

Westerns
I just don't really go for westerns. I've seen a few western movies that I like, but I have yet to find a western book that I really loved.

Starvation
I guess starvation is similar to torture, but I'm giving it it's own category. I have no desire to read about people starving.

Endless Despair
I hate a book that is just plain depressing. I need at least a little happy in my books.

  1. I think that any topic that is just depressing is sooo hard to read, especially animal cruelty and child abuse. It is just so wrong! And I agree about religion, I have nothing against religious things, but I really don't like to read about it! Great list!

  2. Good list, I also don't like reading westerns or about starvation. I also get why it'd be hard to read about child abuse because it's just so horrible but I tend to be interested in were the kids head is but it's also hard to read about the actual abuse. I'm not a big animal person but I also don't see anything appealing about reading animal cruelty. Some middle grade books I'd recommend are the Percy Jackson and the Olympians series and it's sequel series The Heroes of Olympus series and The Kane Chronicles, I personally love all three of those series and I don't think an adult would have a hard time getting into them at all.
